More than Skin Deep
Our first project was inspired by wanting to celebrate the richness of Black UK culture within the context of a broader landscape.
We felt there were few opportunities presented to create and develop links with other Black artists in the Black Diaspora and to both celebrate and share our own specificity, historically and as expressed in present-day Britain. We wanted to expand the images, histories and cultural references currently available about Black communities.
More Than Skin Deep was aimed at addressing the diversity of Black communities within the UK and Europe. It was designed to be presented during Black History Month to assist in the expansion of the historical and cultural references and meanings associated with Black history and the historical processes underlying that history. It was also a celebration of the creativity and inventiveness of the communities who share these histories.
